Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa Trekking, an exclusive adventure to Nepal Far Western Himalayas on the least ventured region. By the main flow of trekkers and adventurers, although the region of Upper Dolpo was well exposed. The Snow-Leopard a classic novel of the mid-1980’s, as well as the film Himalayas of the late 1990’s, were nominated for Oscar Award. But still, the country of Upper Dolpo gets a fewer groups of trekkers in good time of the season. Due to its remote location and away from mainstream trekking trails, which makes the walk is interesting to explore.
Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa Trekking, takes you around Nepal’s largest Shey Phoksundo National Park, an area of 3,555 sq. km. The park hails one of the best places for rare flora and fauna, where wildlife is often seen on trekking. Like the elusive endangered Snow Leopard, with herds of Himalayan Thar and Blue Sheep with exotic bird life.
An exciting and scenic adventure in the harmony of the local immense cultures of ancient Bon and Buddhist religions. The areas of Dolpo is also an ancient caravan and Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal to Tibet.
The adventure to Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa leads to various fascinating areas crossing high scenic passes facing tremendous scenery. As well as following the trail through lovely traditional villages enriched with age-old traditional cultures, similar to Tibetan predecessors.
An interesting walk exploring the country’s best beautiful and mystical and isolated corners from traditional villages and monasteries. Including the magnificent Phoksundo Lake enclosed within lovely scenery of rolling hills of pine forest and snow peaks.
Upper Dolpo Trekking, due to its remote location around Far North West where flight involves both ways. From Kathmandu take a swift flight to land at Nepalgunj city airport around the low sub-tropical South West Nepal. Then taking another short flight to Jhupal around the Dolpo region, where our adventurous walk begins heading due north.
A lovely nice walk following the trail ups and down into blue pine forest past several interesting farm villages. Then reaching the beautiful surrounding at Phoksundo Lake, close to a Ringmo village. Having a free day to enjoy the scenic areas and explore Ringmo village catching glimpse of local culture.
The adventure continues heading towards our destination at Shey Gompa, crossing a high Kang-La Pass, facing a stunning panorama of Dolpo landscapes. Walking to an isolated location at Shey Gompa, also called the Crystal Monastery due to its closeness to Crystal Mountain.
An exciting and interesting place within the wildest areas of Upper Dolpo, enjoy a day at Shey Gompa. Exploring its wilderness and visiting the old monastery, steeped with historical and religious artifacts and relics. The villagers of the whole Dolpo celebrate a grand Shey Festival every 12 years. A kora, a religious walk of the Shey Mountain, and the Monastery circuit are done as a blessing of the sacred site.
From Shey Gompa, the adventure continues heading towards an arid and windswept country enclosed by a large canyon and towering eroded cliff. Reaching Nam and Saldang Gaon, an interesting windblown village crossing several high passes, then heading towards the inner part of Dolpo.
A lovely country facing views of Dhaulagiri Himal in the far-east with Kanjiboraba peaks towards the west. The trail follows the charming village of Tokyu, one of the largest settlements in the area. After an exciting moment exploring the cultural village, and then towards Dho-Tarap the longest valley of Dolpo. Following the Tarap Chu stream to enter a river gorge with waterfalls, and then towards a wide-open valley. Where walk leads to a historical Tarakot village, a large village with a fort in the early days of the Malla regime. A vantage point where the Caravan of Trans Himalaya Trade Route passed through Tarakot in the early days of medieval times.
The trek slowly comes to an end reaching a large town at Dunai headquarters of Dolpo district. From here to Jhupal for the last overnight stop around Dolpo and Far West Nepal.
Next morning a panoramic flight brings you to Kathmandu, after a memorable experience and great adventure on Upper Dolpo & Shey Gompa Trekking.

Day 02: At Kathmandu for trek preparation and sightseeing tour.
Day 03: Fly to Nepalgunj and transfer to hotel 50 minutes flight.
Day 04: Morning flight to Jhupal 2,475 m, trek on route Chepkpa near Dunai-04 hrs.
Day 05: Trek to Chepkpa 2,838 m - 04 hrs. Day 05: Trek to Samduwa village 2,960 m -06 hrs.
Day 06: Trek to Phoksundo Lake 3,630 m - 06 hours.
Day 07: Rest day at Phoksundo Lake for local excursion.
Day 08: Trek to Phoksundo-Khola 3,750 m- 05 hrs.
Day 09: Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang 4,717 m - 04 hrs.
Day 10: Cross Kang-La 5,345 m / 17,536 feet to Shey Gompa 4,160 m-06 hrs.
Day 11: Rest day at Shey Gompa / Crystal Monastery.
Day 12: Trek to Nam-Gaon 4,608 m via Sela (Gela) La 5, 094 m -06 hrs.
Day 13: Trek to Saldang 3,770 m - 05 hrs.
Day 14: Trek to Cha-Gaon 4,910 m - 05 hrs.
Day 15: Trek to Dachu Khola and camp at 4,700 m - 06 hrs.
Day 16: Trek and cross Jyanta-La 5,220 m and walk to Phedi 4,900 m-06 hrs.
Day 17: Trek to Tokyu Gaon 4,209 m - 06 hrs.
Day 18: Trek to Dho-Tarap 3, 944 m- 05 hrs.
Day 19: Trek to Gyagar 3,759 m - 07 hrs.

For Upper Dolpo trekking, the best seasons are in spring and autumn/fall, where days are crystal clear for views and pleasant walks.
The springtime begins from March till May, the high seasons for Upper Mustang trekking and around all Himalayas.
Most days are clear fine and bright with sunshine, which can get overcast in the late afternoon. Chances of snowfall sometimes on higher terrain, cold in the morning late afternoon, and nighttime. The mid-hills are lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendron of various species from trees to a bush.
The next best time is in autumn/fall, another peak season for trekking around the Himalayas. As well for Upper Dolpo, most days are crystal clear for views and scenic walks. However, days are shorter due to sun-light hours, much colder morning and late afternoon till night time.
Could get snowfall sometimes on walks from above 2,500 m high, but the clear bright starry night sky.
Upper Dolpo falls within rain shadow, the monsoon dark clouds hardly enters the vast dry terrain. The monsoon blocked by the high Himalayan Mountain range, where trekkers can enjoy visit during June to August also.
Around Dolpo Region, populated by Tibetan origin tribe’s call themselves Dolpalese. Practice strong Buddhism with a similar culture to their predecessor the Tibetan's heritage and custom. On walks encountering religious monuments and prayer walls and spinning wheels.
The Dolpo people also practice an ancient religion known as Bon, a pre-Buddhism cult, worship of nature, rivers and mountain spirits.
